Boyds Untethered

Our favorite stop on our Tour of the South turned out to be Phenix City AL. It’s the Chattahoochee River that divides Alabama from Georgia.  Phenix City is the Alabama side. Cross the bridge (so close that you can walk it) and you are in Columbus GA. Columbus is the bigger city but we had intentionally decided on Phenix City so we could say that we had spent the night in Alabama. Turns out that Phenix City has a very cool walkway along their  side of the river, which we enjoyed very much. All of Alabama is in the Central Time Zone. But Phenix City chooses (without official permission) to observe the Eastern Time Zone… because they are so closely tied to their larger neighbor on the GA side.

From afar, you might think that Galveston is a resort town. But what you find when you live here is that it’s really just a small town… beside the Gulf. A recent weekend was a great reminder of that.  We started our day at the Oleander Festival listening to our pickleball friend Chuck (he’s the one in the blue Hawaiian shirt) playing in his ukulele band. Later that day we met him and his wife at a bar/boutique on The Strand to hear Keith and the Palm Trees play. Debbie and Chuck had introduced us to Keith a few weeks ago and we enjoyed that night of music enough to want more. After dinner, as we walked over to participate in the monthly “art walk”… we stopped to listen to one of the many musical groups playing on the downtown street corners.  And, came to realize the group was made up of members of that same ukulele band we had heard in the morning.
