Another on our “list of surprises”, after moving to Galveston is… Mardi Gras!  Galveston hosts, the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States… and offers the unique chance to experience sand between your toes and gorgeous beach sunsets while taking in the revelry and lavish parades known to dominate Galveston Island during carnival season. The island’s 111th Mardi Gras celebration, to be held February 18 – March 1, 2022, is expected to draw more than 350,000 attendees for live concerts, parades, balcony parties, several elegant balls and some new festive additions. And, this island-style Mardi Gras has plenty of personality. From the classic revelry found in the heart of Galveston’s historic downtown district, where the bulk of festivities take place, to electronic dance parties and family-friendly events and parades, Mardi Gras! We have lots of sand beaches on Galveston… but we do have rock beaches too. Or more accurately granite beaches. In earlier posts, I talked about the sand that got added to our sand beaches, this summer. Now the rock beaches, that are a little further towards the west end of the seawall, are getting some additions too. Giant granite blocks… that serve to protect those beaches from erosion.
