Boyds Untethered #32
Every couple of years the city of Galveston gets a beach replenishment project.
The Army Core of Engineers regularly dredge out of the shipping channels on the harbor side of the island.
From time to time they offer to put some of that sand on the beaches on the tourist side of the island… and that is what’s been going on at our beach (Babe’s Beach) for several weeks this summer.
This “building up” makes for nicer beaches… but it also adds to the protection that those beaches provide when storms come ashore.
In my first picture you can see the “sand ship” on the horizon…. it is connected to piping that runs ashore and you can see the sand slurry pumping out at the beach end.
From there, they use the bulldozers, in my second picture, to separate the sand from the water and spread it across the beach.
The third machine in that second picture is the guy who moves the pipe sections… to add to the line as they extend down the beach.
